"People often complain that products are not made to last. They feel that making products that wear out fairly quickly wastes both natural and human resources. What they fail to see, however, is that such manufacturing practices keep costs down for the consumer and stimulate demand."
Many people feel that the products are not made to last and making products wear out quickly wastes both the natural resources and human resources. However, some people feel that such manufacturing practices keep costs down for the consumer and simulate demand. I tend to agree with the former and would like to present the reasoning for my beliefs.
Natural resources are limited resources which needs to be sustained for generations to come. As responsible citizens we should be careful in the usage of natural resources. If we tend to make products which utilizes these natural resources we need to make sure that those lasts for a long time. Furthermore Human resources will automatically be conserved if we start producing products that lasts long.
Taking road constructions as an example; Asphalt which is made out of crude oil is used to build roads. This is a cheap and effective means of building roads. However, this does not sustain harsh winter conditions for cities such as Chicago. The city built most of its roads using asphalt to reduce cost. The city claims that this will keep costs down and keep the job market for the construction workers in demand since they tend to build the roads every couple years.
Later on the city decided to build its major tollways using the cement construction. This tends to work really well for the city since it lasts for long time and keeps the roads safe for the automobile drivers. Furthermore this will reduce the wear and tear of the automobile tires.
While the roads built out of the asphalt needs constant maintenance the cement constructed tollways have been fine for a long time keeping the travelers and the city happy. This reduces the usage of natural resources such as crude oil.
