“Some employers who recruit college graduates for entry-level jobs evaluate applicants only on their performance in business course such as accounting, marketing, and economics. However, other employers also expect applicants to have a broad background in such courses as history, literature, and philosophy.”
Do you think that, in the application process, employers should emphasize one type of background-either specialization in business courses or a more varied academic preparation-over the other? Why or why not? Develop your position by using reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.
Response
The issue at hand is whether employers should emphasize one type of background-either specialization in business or a more varied academic preparation-over the other. In my view, I agree that employers should emphasize one type of background specialization in business, due to two following reasons, specific education background that fit with job requirement and show interest to certain field.
Firstly, employer will selected the good candidates in most time is because of their professional background and they also have to slim line the huge amount of candidate by who can fit with the basic professional criteria of the position. For example, if a company looks for a candidate for its IT department, they will search a candidate who has professional background in IT academic. This method can make company to find the right employees more efficiently. Therefore, employers will prefer the applicant who has the right professional education background than the others.
Secondly, people who finished their education in specific business courses could show their interests on the field. For instance, employer who looks for a candidate to fill in sales position will look for the candidate has interest in sales activities. Company will not choose the candidate from accounting education background because most of graduates from accounting degree do not have interesting in doing sales activities. In contrast, employers prefer to search the candidates from administration background rather than other. It is because of they have more interest to meet and interact with other people. Therefore, the interest in specific filed of graduates will boost their work attitude.
Nevertheless, candidate also did not show their hidden skills in their education qualification sometimes. As an example of my friend who holds an engineer degree without any additional business course, he is working in a logistic company as a excellent sale manager. In my opinion, my friend is able to perform well in sale position is because of his hidden skill such as interpersonal skill. Therefore, other factors could also drive people perform well without a specific education background.
In conclusion, taking into account the two reasons I mentioned above that are specific education background that fit with job requirement and show interest to certain field, I agree employers should emphasize one type of background specialization in business. Therefore, I truly believe that most successful businessmen are from the business school.
