I agree with the writer's claim in totality. The premises of the issue are true to the fullest extent ,that children today have an unprecedented number of options when it comes to entertainment and that no parent can be aware of all of these options. The author thus aptly concludes that it falls to the entertainment media to ensure that their content is suitable for young consumers.
Today, children have got so many sources of entertainment like television, gaming consoles, cinema, novels etc. that it simultaneously increases their exposure to more and more information, different lifestyles and different characters(as portrayed in cinemas or cartoons or games) . Children, i.e. the younger consumers, have a brain like a sponge which absorbs information without any discretion. This sensitive and vulnerable state of mind is something entertainment media should be aware of, while bombarding the younger audience with soap operas, animated movies, cartoons, games etc. Any obscene portrayals in such media will only corrupt these young minds.
An example immediately comes to my mind while writing this. There's a cartoon that comes on television called " Shin Chan " ,named after its child protagonist. This kid " Shin Chan " is famous in the show for irritating his mother by passing rude, sometimes indecent, comments at her. My niece, who is only 7 years old, is a die hard fan of this cartoon. She has actually started emulating Shin Chan, going as far as making some of his comments a part of her daily language. This prompted her mother to block that channel completely,as a safety measure a to protect her child's language from getting corrupted.
Another example is of such soap operas ,in which children are shown to behave like adults, are those where such children indulge in activities such as dating , which, in a community like ours (hindus), are not at all taken well at all. These soaps have children the age of 11 or 12 who indulge in such activities. I think any parent would hate to see his/her child getting influenced by such soap operas.
The two examples cited above clearly indicate that the entertainment media has, in fact, forgotten that its audience includes children who learn any and everything around them. It's a reality that such shows on tv, do have an impact on the child's brain, attitude and personality. The same goes for story based games and other similar sources of entertainment.
Thus , if the entertainment media ensures that their content is suitable for young consumers, they will be doing a huge favor for concerned/worried parents, by taking special care about their content and thus ensuring that they are not responsible for corrupting the tender minds of children.
