Analysis of an Argument

" A recent policy change by a major corporation provides employees the option to work from home. Employees who exercised this option were paid an additional allowance to meet whatever expenses arose out of working from home. going by the number of young professionals who availed thenselves of this option, it can be said that all companies should adopt this policy as it would enable them to attract and retain bright young talent."

The above stated argument is based on the assumption that "working from home" option, if implemented by any company, will help the company retain young talent. The argument also assumes that all the young people are bright and are important to any kind of company. The argument might be correct but the reasons provided and the analysis done seems to weaken it.

The argument takes into consideration, number of young professionals who availed themselves of "Work from home" option but not the percentage. If there are 1000 young professionals out of 10000 young professionals of the company opting for "Work from home" , then the percentage is just 10. Though number of people opting seems to be high but the percentage is very less. The argument also neglected employees who are not young. The point that additional allowances would be a burden to exchequer was not discussed. So a detailed analysis of the additional allowances and their impact on the exchequer could have made the argument better. The argument also missed a point that, if the policy is adopted by all the companies then how can that policy attract young professionals.

As the policy comes with allowance there requires a lot of tracking. The argument should also have taken compliance, tracking of the policy. The argument would have been more strong if there were some statistics about the revenue differneces before and after its impementation.Though the policy might help retain the young professionals but the most important thing for a company is its performance. A proper study of the impact of this policy on the performance of the company is needed.

"Working from home" can be an option given to employees based on need. There are many logistics required to assess whether it suits the organisation or not . So it can't be implemented beacuse some young professionals are showing interest in the policy. Similarly, there are many parameters, which the employees consider while working for an organisation. The policies like "working from home" , "flexible Office timings" etc might help to retain some of the employees. So a company should take a stance which would be beneficial to both the company and the employees.
