Analysis of an issue

Although genius is difficult to define, one of the qualities of genius is the ability to transcend traditional modes of thought and create new ones.

Many people and dictionaries have different definitions of what qualifies the title of genius. The statement suggests that at least one of the qualities of a genius is the ability to exceed traditional methods of thought and create new ones. I disagree with this statement since it’s very generic. Throughout our lives, either at work or school it can be said that at some point everyone has thought of creative ways over traditional methods.

Firstly, a genius is a loosely used term. If we hear an idea we may think that it seemed so obvious but no one thought of it until now, we classify that person or that idea as ‘genius’. That doesn’t necessarily mean that the person is a genius. If that was the case then anyone with a creative thought can be classified as a genius. For example, let’s take a look at technology. In the olden days we had walkman’s, portable CD players and now we are at the age of IPOD’s. I don’t think that just because a person thought of developing an iPOD as a mode of listening to music in a convenient manner should be considered a genius.

Secondly, at a workplace and school we are encouraged to think out of the box and in non traditional ways. A student might think of a unique way conducting a science experiment or preparing a presentation. In drama class, students constantly present and express ideas in non traditional ways. We can not classify everyone as genius.

In conclusion, the statement by the author is too vague. It’s true that a genius displays the ability to transcend traditional modes of thought and create new ones but it is also true that people that we know in our everyday lives have the ability to do the same. Until there is a more clear definition of genius it would rudimentary to classify someone a genius based on one of the criteria mentioned by the author.
