Hi,
Kindly review and rate my essay for Analysis of an argument on the below subject:
----------------------
"In general, people are not as concerned as they were a decade ago about regulating their intake of red meat and fatty cheeses. Walk into the Heart's Delight, a store that started selling organic fruits and vegetables and wholegrain flours in the 1960's, and you will also find a wide selection of cheeses made with high butterfat content. Next door, the owners of the Good Earth Café, an old vegetarian restaurant, are still making a modest living, but the owners of the new House of Beef across the street are millionaires."
----------------------
The author of the article claims that people are not caring as much about their intake of meat and fatty cheeses as they would a decade ago. He cites the example of Heart's delight store to say that, due to the trend of increasing demand stores have included a section of high fat content food items apart from the organic fruits, vegetables and wholegrain flours. Author also compares the businesses of Good Earth Cafe and House of Beef to say that those stores which are selling Beefs and other high fat content food items are becoming richer and richer. There are couple of flaws in this argument.
First, in citing the example of Heart's Delight store the author does not provide any evidence to support that it is the same people who were earlier concerned about intake of meat and fatty foods have now started to consume red meat and other fatty items. It may be possible that, in the locality where Heart's Delight is located many people from different places have moved in and they like to have red meat and fatty foods, and it is for these immigrants only that Heart's Delight is having a section of high butterfat cheeses. Without clearing off this assumption, the author's argument can not be believed that people have started the heavy intake of red meat and other fatty foods.
Secondly, the author is also falsely assuming that mere sales of Beef and fatty food items is making the owners of the stores such as House of Beef millionaires. In this case again, it may be possible that the House of Beef is already a well established business from generations in the locality. It may well have its business spread across entire state or nation wide. So certainly, in this case, they will be far richer than any other small businesses in the same locality. This, again, does not prove that people have no regulation over their intake of meat or fatty foods. Hence, author's argument can not be relied upon if this assumption is not taken care of.
In sum, author's claim that people are no more concerned about their intake of red meat and fatty foods is not justified. In order to strengthen the argument, author must provide evidence that people are actually changing their preference of food habits and increasing their intake of meat and other fatty foods. Author also needs to provide information to support his claim that it is through the increased demand, and thus its sale, of Beef and fatty foods that owners are becoming rich and this is an indication of changing preferences.
