KINDLY RATE: MANHATTAN (AWA) ISSUE

ESSAY QUESTION:
"Poor health and high stress levels diminish the productivity of today's office workers. In order to maximize profits, companies need to provide white-collar employees with free exercise facilities and free wellness classes."

In your opinion, how accurate is the view expressed above? Use reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading to develop your position.

YOUR RESPONSE:
Though an interesting one, the issue whether to provide workers in white-collar jobs with free exercise facilities and wellness classes with a view to increasing productivity is quite a controversial one. Some people believe that providing free exercise facilities and wellness classes is supportive of an increase in profitability, but on the other hand, other opined that such strategy is counter productive. In this presentation, I hereby present issues that support the later position and refute the former ground for various reasons as discussed below.

At first, the position of the article appears compelling, but on a closer look, it is fraught with many faults and weakness that are not far reaching. To organize free exercise programes and wellness classes suggests that every staff is equally on the same health capacity. The exercise program might work for a handfull of the employees but fail for others. What if 90 per cent of the staffs are not interested? WHat happens if, upon introduction and participation of the staffs, many of them develop worsened health condition that further threaten their health and consequently their productivity to the company? It is true that the health of a staff has a direct correlation with his or her productivity.

Furthermore, the articles does not consider other factors in increasing productivity of a company. Health programs on their own do not constitute a 100% assurance that productivity will increase. Training in current technological trends is inevitable if a company soughts to compete effectively. Companies must invest in current, relevant staff training. This gives them the latest skills in managing their positions, keeps them abreast of trends in checking unheathy rivalry, and it also ensures best practice is used in providing the best, unparalleled products. For example, after trying in vain to work with Ericsson Nigeria Limited, I decided to take a course in GSM core 4G fundamentals with Ericsson using their equipments. Thereafter, I applied to the same company and got employed after the necessary recruitment protocals where exhausted.

Finally, the amount paid to staff plays a big role in productivity of a company. Imagine a company staff that cannot afford to eat, get basic accommodation, and a good car. The morale of such staff is dampened and he tends to look out for better job offers that guarantee increased salary structure. The issue of growth prospect cannot be over emphasized. If workers know that after some years of service, they will be accelarate to higher positions, there is a strong tendency that they will not only contribute great efforts, but they won't mind offering thier time to do official works, even though unsolicited.

In sum, staff productivity does not increase by generally organizing free exercise and wellness classes for the staffs at large. This constitutes many errors as discussed above. However, upon considering the aspects raised above, it is true to the contrary that the above assertion holds. Salary, training are important aspects of productivity.
