ESSAY QUESTION:
"Parents should not shoulder the full burden of their children's college tuition. If university students are required to pay for at least a portion of their education, they will take their studies more seriously and, ultimately, benefit more from their college experience."

Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the position stated above. Support your viewpoint using reasons and examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.

YOUR RESPONSE:
The author states that the Parents should not shoulder the full burden of their Children's college tuition. If university students are required to pay for at least a portion of their education, they will take their studies more seriously and ultimately benefit from their college experience. Although I agree that students need to take their studies seriously in order to benefit from their college experience, I do not think that the seriousness of the students towards their studies can only be increased by sharing the burden of tuition. Moreover in many cases students may not be able to devote enough time to their studies due to the time they are needed to spend at workplace. Hence I do not agree with the issue topic.
First of all author believes that students will always have enough time to study seriously as well as to earn money. In many cases the coursework is considerably difficult and the student may hardly find any time to do things other than studies. This example is particularly applicable to higher education programmes such as MBA or Doctorates. The students many times struggle to find enough time to complete the coursework or thesis. In such situation, it is not practical to expect that students should share the burden of tuition. In some cases, students may share the burden of the tuition. However spending less time on coursework can result in poor grades. As a result, student may have to be happy with a low paying jobs as most of the companies give very high importance to the grades earn during the coursework.
The author assumes that the students will always find enough resources to work and pay the tuition. However many time such opportunities are not available. In a highly populated country such as India, the supply of labor considerably exceeds the supply of work. In such situation, it is difficult for a student to obtain the work which will pay him well. Thus in the absence of the right opportunity, a student needs to rely on parental support for payment of tuition fees.
Moreover, many institutes want the students to focus solely on the coursework. The institutes in India do not allow the masters and doctoral students to work during the coursework. Also flexibility in working hours is very essential for the students who work while studying. In many countries, the jobs involve continuous 8 hour shift for at least five days a week. The students can generally spend 20- 25 hours a week at workplace. Hence it is very difficult for students to work and obtain funds to pay their tuition in such countries.
The author believes that sharing the burden of tuition is necessary to create seriousness about studies among the students. However there is no reason to believe that all students originally lack seriousness in studies. Although some students may lack seriousness in studies, a lot of other options exist which can increase the seriousness of a student at studies.
To summarize I don't agree with author. The parents can to shoulder the burden of their children's tuition either fully or partially. The decision of the parents should depend on the situation i.e whether it is possible for the child to study seriously while working and whether enough opportunities of work are available for the child.
