AWA ESSAYS: Analyze Issues
ESSAY QUESTION:
"Children today have an unprecedented number of options when it comes to entertainment. Since no parent can be aware of all of these options, it falls to the entertainment media to ensure that their content is suitable for young consumers."
Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the opinion stated above. Support your point of view with reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.
My Response
Entertainment industry does its best to provide rating on all their programs so that it can be understood by viewers whether it is suitable for them, its up to parents how they want to enforce in each household.
Its up to the rating board to decide whether the program which is claimed by Entertainment board as suitable for children is indeed suitable for children.
One could claim that entertainment industry for their own financial gain, may try to sell some adult contents to Children but its again the censor board or the Rating Board, which decides the suitability of the program, and based on culture the different restriction on such programs are put by these committees.
Once entertainment industry and government has done their duty then its up to the Parents to enforce those options within household. There are different options for entertainment but parents should know all these options and guide children to choose right content.
Once a person is open to internet he/she can browse any possible options. All websites which contain adult contents provide the option to confirm if person is above 18 or below, based on that answer it locks its contents, it will be not possible for website to understand the true age of browser, so its up to parent to force such locks on the laptop or computers so that even unknowingly children would not browse such sites.
Parents have responsibility to communicate with their children and choose entertainment programs suitable for this, they need to inculcate good habits in their children and monitor their day to day activity to check whether they are following set rules.
Many mobiles phones give the access to such contents , its up to parents whether they want to buy such mobiles to their children and restrict the phone which are used only for communication. They should keep track of the company which children keep so that they do not end up having access to such media.
If parents find some daily soaps or programs on TV which are not suitable for children then child lock should be set so that only adults in family can watch the program. For example GMAT and the CITY program on TV is a good soap for many adults, but its no way suitable for children, If entertainment industry has to think about children they will never produce Soaps like GMAT and the city, this doesn't mean that these kind of program shouldn't exists. So its up to parent whether they want to watch such programs along with Kids or not.
In Sum, Entertainment industry can provide all the tools to distinguish whether their content is adult or suitable for children , its then left to parents to understand those contents and decide what is best for their children.
