A- the pronoun 'it' does not have a reference
B-which does not have a reference
C-awkward and idiom usage is not proper
D-'it' has not reference
E-idiom usage is not proper

all the options have some or the other grammatical mistakes.
Maybe we need to choose the one with the least one or such type cannot come in GMAT

C/E are clearly out.

B is following the idiom not only but also but it says farmland gave furniture..

I took A > D

But I do agree with D.. the idiom not only but also
First take: 640 (50M, 27V) - RC needs 300% improvement
Second take: coming soon..

You cant use But also with out...not only.. i guess you made a typo in the options...

D. The systematic clearing of forests in the United States created farmland
(especially in the Northeast) and gave consumers relatively inexpensive houses and furniture, but it also

Is D still the OA?

why was this post recreated?
I remember myself posting on an older post regarding this here :

If bump, please bump the link.

This question is an excellent question in which the idiom Not Only, But Also is in an incorrect answer!

you use not only X, but also Y

When both X and Y are used in the same light(either positive or negative)

Here, creating farmland(positive) and Erosion(negative) are opposite effects of the clearing.

Hence, ALL not only X, but also Y can be eliminated
