Hello Everyone!

I am a 28 yrs old female from Delhi, India with the following profile:
  • Applying for B-schools for fall 2012.
    GMAT (92%) - 710 (Q 50 - 92%, V 38 - 83%)
Did my Computer Science Engineering from Kurukshetra University, - Not very proud of this school! :-( Though I was a good student and scored a 76% - and am not sure how to convert this to GPA!
Have been working for the past 6 years in IT industry performing different roles. Though I have worked mainly as a programmer,I have been involved in sales and marketing. I also worked as a Business analyst - a link between the users and the development team.
Of the 6 years, i have been working in the US for the past 3 years for different projects, in different domains - from energy to utilities. Well, not that it matters, also in different cities! :-)
I also did marketing of an online game - https://worldofthelivingdead.com/game/frontpage. This was not a part of any job, I did this for a friend. I applied various marketing strategies to increase the number of users of the game from a few hundreds to 2000.
Extra curricular:
Did volunteering work for the blind in Bangalore, India
Was an active member of the undergrad school's event organizing committee.

I am planning on applying to
  • Booth
    Kellogg
    Texas A&M - Mays
    UT at Austin - McCombs
    Rice University
Need to figure out a few "safe/reachable" schools. Any ideas on which could be these so called "safe" schools for my profile?

I am not so sure about my GMAT score being enough given my profile. I have been reading that since hordes of IT professionals are applying to business schools, my chances are pretty low. I do believe in my abilities and personality, but sometimes one has to be realistic.

So all advice is welcome!!! Thanks in advance for your time![/list]

Hello

Since you are aiming for top schools then a score above 700 is desirable. However GMAT alone won't determine your chances of admission; beyond the academics will also help you in determining your candidature and your work experience plays a vital role as well. In general most of the Indian applicants are from engineering background with a good 4-5 years of work experience. So you would need to differentiate yourself from others . Start thinking what makes you unique and what's that 'hook' that will be key to your application. Make sure you follow the 'show rather than tell' principle so that the admissions committee could really understand your strengths and differentiating factors.

However it is not just the academics but beyond the academics that will help you in determining your candidature. Generally most of the applicants have a good 4-5 years of full time work experience apart from part time work exp or internships. Although it is not just the work experience that counts but also what you did there like-what were your achievements, what initiative you took, what changes you drove in your workplace etc. So if you can show that in 6 years you have demonstrated the skills business schools are looking for you can put in a strong set of essays.

Yes, the IT pool is big & deep & competitive & all that. And No, your chances are not pretty low - you still have a nice profile. When people talk about the disadvantages of being in the IT pool, they mean that industry (in itself) is not a differentiating factor & you need to have something else. So do you have that 'something else'? I say 'quite likely'!

So who are you? A female computer engineer with a good GMAT who has extensive multi-cultural & multi-functional experiences to share - you know industries, you know their shortcomings, you know domains & you know their complexities. Also that game story would be super sweet for the Booth presentation.

Problems: What are your goals & how consistent was your career path keeping that in mind? How closely do the schools/programs align with your goals? Apart from the IT pool, there is another sort of stereotype present - super quant skills & lower verbal in the GMAT. In itself that is not a problem, but make sure that your essays are picture perfect.

Lastly, I think you already have your safe schools in that list. If anything, add a couple of European schools to the list.

Good Luck!

Rice and Texas A&M are definitely safeties. UT McCombs is somewhere between a safety and a target school. Booth and Kellogg are reaches (but potentially doable).
