Profile Evaluation

by canadian52 » Tue Feb 19, 2013 9:51 am
Hello,

I know I am still a few years out from applying to MBA programs but I would like to know what I can do to better prepare myself.

Age: 25 (Male, white, Canadian)
GPA: 2.7 (Have taken 5 quantitative courses since - received A to A+ in each (finance, accounting, statistics))
GMAT: 720

Education: Business (finance/marketing) undergrad from Canadian University. Grades trend upward... wasn't sure what I wanted to do during first few general years/had too much fun. 3.5 and 3.8 in last two years respectively.

Work Experience:
Internships: Financial analyst at one of Canada's largest telecom companies
Full-time: 2.5 years in business development at one of Forbes Top 10 most innovative tech companies (Promoted roughly once per calendar year). Should become a manager in 6 months or so.

Extracurriculars:
VP positions in University Commerce association
Teaching Assistant (3 different economics classes)
Ran 3 large university events
Big Brother Organization
Habitat for Humanity leader - Lead project to build houses in Nicaragua

Plan: Get an MBA in finance and leverage my skills (biz dev, finance) to gain employment at top consulting firm (tech sector)

Target Schools: Tuck, Darden, Johnson, Stern, Haas, Booth, Ross, Kellogg, Yale

Thank you very much!

Looking very good so far, esp. the work experience. A bit of a shame for that 2.7, but c'est la vie... you can kind of try and make up for it a bit by kicking ass on the GMAT (which I would suggest you start preparing for NOW anyways... after all, it's good for five years) And that's the first thing you can do.

Besides that - keep on trucking with your volunteer work. Looks like you have some awesome stuff there, and if you see more opportunities for innovation, leadership or initiative (like running your own fundraiser) GO for it! That kind of stuff can help a lot. Other than that, same goes for work - if you get that promotion to manager, that will be awesome, and anything you can do to get more managerial duties and workers will help.

That, and the GMAT...

Good luck with it all...

Thanks for your reply Jon.

I wrote the GMAT just under a year ago and scored a 720. I wrote it with the intention of applying to a non-MBA international business masters at Queens University. There was a little bit of a rush on the application as they restrict admission to candidates with less than 2 years work experience and I was approaching that point. Had I have taken more time prepping I'm sure I would have scored significantly higher.

With my score and my GPA, should I retest and try for a higher score?

Thank you!

Nah forget about the GMAT. Once you pass the 700 mark, it doesn't seem to matter all that much (720 is a nice bonus) You've done your job. You are smart. You've proven it. So, now I think your time is better spent on other things. An 800 GMAT won't magically get you in anywhere... the schools pretty much do look at your package holistically - what you did, who you are, how you write... so all that stuff is pretty important too.

But the GMAT, you can thank your lucky stars, you're done with it. Your 720 is int he bag!
