Profile Evaluation- Media professional

by nitinpahuja » Tue Oct 20, 2009 9:45 pm
HI

I am a 24 year old Indian male. I have a Bachelors Degree in Business Economics from the University of Delhi and have also completed a Post graduate Diploma in International marketing from Delhi School of Economics with my percentage being 64 and 68 respectively in the courses.

I have been average at academics in the School (class X-64%, Class XII- 83%)but have an excellent extra curricular profile with a lot of competition participation and positions of responsibility at the college level across music, sports, debates etc.

As far as my work ex is concerned, it presently stands at 27 months and should be around 40 months when I apply in OCt 2010. I had an initial stint at KPMG Risk Advisory for 5 months and got two pay raises during the same. After that I appeared for some Indian Management Institutes and got some interesting interview calls which I unfortunately could not convert. I thought it would be unfair to join a company in the interim and hence did not take a professional assignment for 7 months.

I utilized these 7 months to launch a web based business alongside my 3 partners which unfortunately is not doing that well.( I am confused if I should use the 7 months that I invested here in my work ex or not).

Since July 2008, I have been working as an Editorial Resource for a leading Newspaper in the country and have over 50 articles published. I have also made a significant contribution to my team's expansion into Advertisement development and Print Media innovation. I have got the highest performance rating in my team in both the appraisal cycles I have thus far been exposed to.I am expecting a promotion very soon as well and have worked on crucial projects like Microsoft, Malaysia Tourism, Disneyland, Govt of India etc.

My primary reason for doing an MBA is to develop my competence as a Media Leader of the future who can play a potent role into the evolution of social utility of Digital Media especially in Developing nations.

My target schools are Judge, Said,NYU Stern, Columbia, Tuck, NUS and ISB in the order of preference.

Could you kindly evaluate my chances against the aspired Schools.

My GMAT score is 730

Thanks in advance.

Hi Nitin,

Thanks for your post. Please see my comments below:

It is good to see that you were so involved in extracurricular activities during your time in undergrad. You will certainly want to note this in your applications as it will help offset concerns about your average performance. In addition, your GMAT score of 730 is quite solid.

Your work experience seems diverse and interesting. You should certainly plan to note that you had an entrepreneurial venture during the 7 month gap in your employment. For the most part, adcoms tend to become concerned about gaps in employment that are longer than 2 months. Noting your venture will help alleviate their concerns.

You've compiled a solid list of programs. Given the information you have shared, I certainly think you can be competitive.

All of the programs you have listed have a strong sense of community. You will want to do your research and find ways to demonstrate in your application and essays that you will be a valued member of the campus community. Taking the time to learn about the programs and your "fit" will go a long way in boosting your application. One way to do this is through your desire to get involved in clubs and other campus organizations. Your strong involvement in undergrad will be an indication of your likeliness to be involved, but you should also demonstrate that you have been involved in extracurricular activities, personal interests and hobbies on a regular basis since graduating from undergrad.
