career gap and MBA

by Skapila » Wed Aug 26, 2009 7:03 am
I am a prospective MBA applicant and would like to request for my profile evaluation.
I am an electrical engineer and have worked in Information technology sector for four years with IBM and Infosys.
I have had a good career progression and have performed at different roles within the firm. Worked at client locations in the UK and Switzerland in both technical and functional roles.

I have a GMAT score of 720 and a GPA of 6.7/10.

I had to move to US after I got married and since there were several limitations of VISA and other issues , I wasn't able to get a full time job in US. I was working part-time with a tutoring service and have worked as an instructor for GMAT and CFA for last year and a half.

During this period volunteered my services to American Red cross and The FreeGirl Foundation and contributed a lot to their marketing strategies .

It would be great if you can evaluate my profile and let me know if the career gap of two years would be a major stumbling block in my candidature for the B school.

I have shortlisted the following B schools:

1. Ross school of Business, University of Michigan ( Reapplicant)
2.Fuqua school of Business, Duke University( Reapplicant)
3.NYU stern
4.Yale University
5.Darden
6.Tuck
7.ISB ( Indian School of Business)

Thanks so much for your help,

Regards,
Shilpa

Hi Skapila and thanks for your post. Please see my comments below:

It appears as though you've had solid, steady growth at two well know organizations. The international experience is certainly a nice feather in your cap and can hopefully offer up some potential essay topics. You'll certainly want to address the gap in your career in your applications. You should be prepared to discuss your move to the US and subsequent visa issues as well. Are you actively seeking full time employment at this time? This is certainly worth noting. Ideally you'll be in a full time role prior to submitting your applications as this can help quell any concerns the adcom may have. I suggest that you look for work in the IT industry that would return you to the same level or higher than you were prior to your move to the US. Another option would be to pursue an entry level job in the field that you wish to enter post MBA.

I have a GMAT score of 720 and a GPA of 6.7/10.

You have an excellent GMAT score. Congrats! This is certainly on par with the programs you've listed. I can't fully evaluate your GPA since I don't know the name of the institution you attended.

I had to move to US after I got married and since there were several limitations of VISA and other issues , I wasn’t able to get a full time job in US. I was working part-time with a tutoring service and have worked as an instructor for GMAT and CFA for last year and a half.

During this period volunteered my services to American Red cross and The FreeGirl Foundation and contributed a lot to their marketing strategies .

It's nice to see that you are volunteering while looking for work. Is an interest in marketing the reason you wish to pursue your MBA? If so, you should be sure to mention your roles at the Red Cross and FreeGirl in your essays as a way to tie together your career goals.

It would be great if you can evaluate my profile and let me know if the career gap of two years would be a major stumbling block in my candidature for the B school.

You have compiled a solid list of schools. Since I don't have all the details of your work and academic experience, nor do I know your short term goals, I can't fully evaluate your ability to be competitive at the programs listed. However, I think it is fair to say that you certainly could be competitive at many of them.

Please see my comments above in regard to how to address the gap in employment in your applications.

If you would like a free, detailed assessment of your profile, please send your resume to [email protected].

Best,

Stacey
