Okay so the madness started with this question:

Got confused pages aftr pages of discussion but instead of getting the doubt cleared I just got more confused.Fianlly got this:

It says that 'THAT" could be followed by sing or plural.
it depends on the context.
it can modify either one or the substances
Please note that "not always modify immediate preceding noun

The "that" clause is a modifier - it modifies the noun before it

Now I am really confused about the function of "that" guys..please help :cry:

basically, according to Erin,
one of the NOUN + that/who +PLURAL VERB

Went back to my notes, and it seems the key is to look for the definite article "the". The modifying clause should modify the definite subject/object.

case 1:
One of the students who have scored high is very smart. <--- "who have scored high" modifies "the students" (plural) Meaning is that out of the students who have scored high, one of them is very smart

case 2:
The one of the students who has scored high is very smart. <--- "who has scored high" modifies "the one" and specifically that one (singular). Meaning is that This particular one, who, out of all students, has scored high, is very smart.

In case 1, "one" is indefinite, so "who have/has" modifies "the students" group which is the only definite entity in the sentence; in case 2, "the one" is definite, and "who have/has" goes on to modify and further explain what it is about this specific "one".
