GMAT -610. Please advise.

by dare2dream » Fri Sep 25, 2009 2:33 am
Hi,

I have just finished with GMAT 610(q-47, v-28). I have gone through many test and consistently scoring 660-700, but on the final day something else appeared.

I am software engineer with total of 6 years of experience and wanted to pursue 1 year executive MBA.

Could you please suggest me whether i have to go for the test again? If yes, please advise me, how can i go ahead?

Your help will be much appreciated.

Hi Dare2dream,

We're going to need some more info before advice can be given:

Which programs are you targeting? is your current score competitive to get in? Maybe with your work experience and accomplishments, a 610 is perfectly fine.

If you do need to retake, what study materials did you use the first time and how long did you prepare for?

Can you provide practice exam score and breakdowns?

This info will dictate the new study plan because you need to devise a schedule to conquer any weak areas.

Princeton

Practice test scores:
GMAT Prep1 : 660(M-50, V-30)

800score1 : 650(M-48, V-29)
800score2 : 670(M-48, V-31)
800score3 : 670(M-49, V-29)
Princeton1 : 640(M-48, V-30)
Princeton2 : 650(M-49, V-30)
Princeton3 : 660(M-48, V-33)
Kaplan1 : 580(M-50, V-24)

I am planning to appear again in the exam in november end, so please suggest me, how can i go ahead with the preparation to improve the score atleast by 60-70? Also i believe Verbal is my weak point, so please suggest the good material to improve this part.

dare2dream,

Your quant scores look great, so try to maintain your current level by reviewing and solving a few practice problems a day.

In terms of improving verbal, that really depends on your areas of weakness.

If SC is your weak spot, manhattan sc is pretty much the best resource currently out on the market. (but im currently working on writing a better one!)

You should definitely take a look through that book if you haven't already.

Second, are you making notecards for all of the problems that you seem to be getting wrong? This is extremely painstaking and tedious during the review process but in 4 years of tutoring, I can say that this is the single most important factor to score improvement. You need to be identify why you are getting certain questions wrong. Maybe it is a rule you don't understand 100%, maybe its mis-reading the question. Either way, identify what this is and figure out a strategy to overcome this.

Example of what I recommend to my students to put on notecards:

rule - whether vs if

whether is always better. whether implies whether or not and is a choice between one of two options. If implies choice between multiple options. note: "whether or not" is almost always wrong.

Follw this rule up with an example using the exact problem you got wrong.

Finally, review these notes everyday. and I mean everyday! This will feel like straight up torture because it is so monotonous. But after a week or two, these rules will be completely drilled into your head. Once you see a problem that used to be a former weakness, you're going to have alarms going off in your brain and the correct answer is going to seem very obvious. This is the level you need to be at for a high score

Keep the intensity at a high level while using some smart study strategies and you can get the score you want, I am sure of this.

Good luck!
Paul

Thanks Paul for your kind suggestion.

I did create the notecard as suggested by you, and memorize them. SC seems ok to me, but facing the hurdles in CR and RC. Do you have some suggestion to improve this part?

Apart from this, can you suggest me any other good material, i should go through?

Also please suggest, whether repeating the GMAT have any -ve impression on the universities?
