ESSAY QUESTION:
"The purpose of government is not to ensure the financial well-being of its citizens, but rather to maintain order."
From your perspective, how accurate is the above statement? Support your position with reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading.

MY RESPONSE:
The purpose of government is not to ensure the financial well-being of its citizens, but rather to maintain order, is quite tricky statement. Since the government has wide range of responsibilities. In the below statements i will present the statements opposing the above statement.

The governments in the democratic system are elected by the people with one of the aims that the government will ensure the financial well-being of its citizens. History says that the governments that did not bother about the well-being of its citizens has perished. For example, Egypt, the law and order in the country was fine but the government did not ensure the financial well being of its citizens. This resulted in the revolution which ousted the government in Egypt. Similarly, Libyan government also faced the consequences of not ensuring the well being of its citizens.

If the government does not ensure the financial well being of its citizens, the rich gets richer and the poor gets poorer resulting in the more divide in the income levels. This situation will result in lack of harmony between people, increase of thefts, political uncertainty, revolts by the have not's against the have's, leading to a law and order problem in the country.

Therefore a government that ensures the citizens well being will make the citizens live happily, happy citizens does not violate the law and order, thus resulting a stable government.
