Mr. Kindle's dog was hit by a car, and this is the reason he was so sad in class today.

a) and this is the reason
b) and this being a good reason why
c) which is the reason why
d) because that is the reason why

Even i had same thinking, but i was able to strike out other options.
Also, in this case WHICH modifies the whole preceding clause.
