The following appeared as part of an advertisement for Adams, who is seeking reelection as governor:
‘Reelect Adams, and you will be voting for proven leadership in improving the state’s economy. Over the past year alone, 70 percent of the state’s workers have had increases in their wages, 5,000 new jobs have been created, and six corporations have located their headquarters here. Most respondents in a recent poll said they believed that the economy is likely to continue to improve if Adams is reelected. Adams’s opponent, Zebulon, would lead our state in the wrong direction, because Zebulon disagrees with many of Adams’s economic policies.’

The conclusion of the text above is that reelecting candidate Adams voters will be voting a candidate who has proved leadership in improving the state’s economy. The conclusion is supported by pieces of information such as job creation, wage increases, number of corporations that have located their headquarters in the state and polls. It is also said that the opponent, Zebulon, would not be a good governor because he disagrees with Adams’s economic policies. However, the conclusion can be weakened because the evidences provided to support it is flawed.

Firstly, the information provided is about only the past year. Therefore we don’t know the previous situation in the state. Additionally, it is also unknown the number of jobs lost or the companies that have left the state. These two pieces of information would be very helpful to better evaluate the conclusion given that we would have something to compare with the information provided by the text.

Secondly, it is argued that a recent poll showed that most of the people asked believed that the economy is likely to continue to improve is the current governor is reelected. Nevertheless, the text does not say anything about who were asked in the poll, and how many people were asked. Thus we don’t know whether the population of the poll was significant or not.

Thirdly, the text ends saying that the opponent, Zebulon, would lead the state to the wrong direction in terms of economic improvement because he disagrees with Adams’s economic policies. This statement is assuming that Adams’s economic policies are the best to lead the state to economic improvement. However, it is possible that Zebulon’s economic policies are better of more effective than the current governor’s.

Summarizing, the conclusion provided is not strong enough because it is based in pieces of information that are incomplete or inaccurate. Therefore I would not vote for Adams without further information.
