gmat paper test

Hi Guys,

I know this one is veryyyy simple, but dont know why I'm stuck in this. Can u pls help as how to solve such question quickly...

q--The sum 7/8 +1/9 is between

(A)
1/2 and 3/4

(B)
3/4 and 1

(C) 1 and 1(1/4)

(D)
1(1/4) and 1(1/2)

(E)
1(1/2) and 2

ans: 'b'

7/8+1/8 = 1 , so 7/8+1/9 must be less than 1 (because 1/9 is less that 1/8 ) but very close to 1 ( 0.96). So the only option that is close to 1 is option B.

On a related note, it's a good idea to memorize some common fraction-to-decimal conversions.

7/8 is .875
1/9 is .111
Sum is .986

I like either way (estimating or decimal conversions) of doing this problem.

Just to be precise here, 0.111 = 111/1000, and not 1/9.

1/9 = 0.11111.... repeating ad infinitum.
