B ?

more so than is incorrect. A, B and E remain.

A - use of when is incorrect.
E - incorrect use of perfect tense. Also, wordy

A hypothetical alternative is mentioned, so use of were (subjunctive mood) is correct in B.

gmat_perfect - I believe that you posted lots of Official problems, which have already been discussed.

This is tricky problem.

"women who took" is parallel to "those who retired".

C is correct.

more so than => is a good
so refers to previous verb / action [reported high marital satisfaction] etc

- i agree with akhpad, we hav to compare marital satisfaction between women who took new jobs and those who retired completely

- a study found something means facts were stated and analysed hence not subjunctive

-C wins.

C is correct.

A study on couples' retirement transitions found that women who took new jobs after retiring from their primary careers reported high marital satisfaction, more than when retiring completely.

Here we are comparing two groups of women not same group of women in different aspects (as per time or job):

1. Who retire and take a new Job
2. Who retire completely.

Hence we can discard the options comparing the same group in two aspects.

(A) same group

(B) same group, and also "were" is used for hypothetical situation. If retiring completely is Hypo then how the women know that they will be happy or sad.

(C) Correct!!! Only left out after POE

(D) women took new job is not parallel to retiring.

(E) same group

A good question. The power of prephrasing is borne out by this question. It also tests the detailed reading skills of the test takers.

Let us break it down, it talks about retired couples and specifically women in such couples. The comparison is between women in such couples who retire and take up new jobs with totally retired women, and it says that the former's marital satisfaction > that of the latter.

Given this backdrop let us analyze the answer choices:
All choices except C change the meaning.

What makes the question good here is that if the logic of the question is not understood all choices are very enticing! One could easily go down the path of looking for "more.....than" and parallelism and then selecting A. Also since the majority of choices are forcing us towards answers like A one tends to ignore C the lone warrior!

Hope this helps!
