Need to know where i stand

by Newbie726 » Tue Feb 22, 2011 6:29 am
Good day to you all!

I am a hotel graduate with 2 years in the hotel industry, now working as a admin for Healthcare.

I recently took the GMATS and scored a 610

Even with a poor GPA of 2.8 would it be possible for me to get accepted to a School such as Columbia, NYU, or Fordham?

Has there been past similiar situations that people has been accepted to these top 3 schools?

Newbie726,

Unfortunately, your GMAT / GPA combination will close the door for you at Columbia and NYU, but you may have a chance at Fordham. Although their average GPA is 3.2, their average GMAT is 590.

Good luck to you,

Thank you very much Paul for your response during your busy time. I am planning on taking the GMATS again, what would be a GMAT score that i should reach for in order to be in recognition with Columbia and NYU (with the poor G.P.A). Do i have a chance?

Newbie726,

If you built an alternate transcript, contextualized the reasons for the 2.8 GPA effectively in your optional essay, and scored a, say, 750 or better on the GMAT, you might have a chance at NYU or Columbia, but probably only if they found your profile to be sufficiently distinctive to overlook the negative GPA and your reasons for the 2.8 are goods ones. That is, a 2.8 that resulted from working a full-time job to pay for your school is a much different animal than a 2.8 caused by lack of "good study habits," excessive partying, etc.
