I am a current Teach For America corps member teaching middle school Spanish. I'd like to get into a top MBA program with an emphasis on social entrepreneurship or international business.

Profile:

Undergrad GPA 3.76 from BYU

Major: International Relations (mix of Poli Sci and Econ)
Minor: Spanish

Work/service experience:
-Currently teaching secondary Spanish through TFA
-Research Assistant
-Poli Sci teaching assistant
-2yr church/service mission in Dominican Republic
-Fellowship recipient doing field experiment in South Africa
-3month humanitarian volunteer work in Uganda

I have not taken the GMAT yet but I am hoping to get a score close to 700. My main concern is my lack of business experience. Also, I do not have a lot of quant experience besides my econ classes and calc class (econ class grades weren't too pretty and calc = A). If I can get a 700 on the GMAT, what do you think my chances are of getting into a top 15 program??

Thanks!

Hi,

Getting into TFA has itself become quite a hurdle, so this is a great pre qualification. And TFA alums do make it to MBA programs. Your GPA is solid, and a GMAT in the 700-720 range would definitely help your case.

What I would recommend is that you see if there is a job you can take over the next couple of years that is more on the operational side of education, like helping to run a charter school reporting to a COO type. While you can certainly apply to MBA programs now, I feel that to compete with your peers, having this kind of "managerial" experience will enhance your field tenure and make you a more complete candidate.

Good Luck!

Actually you have a great profile! Even if you get a bit below the average GMAT, you have a rare Socially oriented profile that schools love to see. If you can show a bit of leadership, and be very clear about your goals, you should have more than a fighting chance. Just show them your passion for Social entrepreneurship with highly specific goals (Given your experience, maybe Education consulting, etc.) and you should be good!

We have worked with many Mormons who position their church/service as professional experience. With your grades and TFA programs you should be competitive for Top 15 and even Top 7. For Social Entrepreneurship I would suggest you research Haas and Columbia domestically and INSEAD internationally.

Good luck,
