Profile evaluation - help me please!

by rocky7 » Wed Dec 08, 2010 5:00 pm
Please give me your absolute honest opinion about my chances of getting into a decent (top 25) program.

UG - University of Michigan - Civil and Environmental Engineering
GPA - 2.6 (but trending upward...)

GMAT - haven't taken it officially - but based on practice tests around 700

Experience - 2.5 years as Civil Engineer then left to backpack around the world (independently on four continents) for 8 months came home and am doing environmental engineering for past 1.5 years plus independent civil engineering consulting work

Extra-curriculars - high school varsity coach for two years, numerous volunteer organizations

What are my chances and what decent schools are most likely admittances?? Any advice/suggestions would be very much appreciated! Thanks.

Hello,

I'm afraid I can't comment meaningfully without more information, most importantly what your goals are, or what areas you want to focus on. With such a low GPA, I suggest taking a relevant course or two and earning an A if you haven't done so already, to demonstrate academic capability. Of course a 700+ GMAT will also help.

Your work experience could also be problematic. While your work seems interesting, adcoms also want to see strong forward momentum in your career, strong advancement. It's not clear you've had that. The time off to backpack is an idiosyncratic aspect to which adcoms could react with much variation - from admiring it and relishing it as a differentiating factor, to an indication of lack of professional focus.

The high school varsity experience isn't something you should use or rely on; rather, you should focus on experiences at college level and beyond.

With the low GPA and the unusual experience, one way to improve your chances would be to apply to a lot of schools if possible.

Best regards,
