Hi,
I am extremely interested in making it to the top notch B Schools. Just wanted to ask about my chances at doing so.I am planning to apply for fall of 2012,so there is still a year and half to go for it.

Stats

Male, 23 years old
Indian, IT Engineer.
Graduated from Mumbai University with 69% on the scale of 100.

GMAT : 2 attempts.
1st : 650 (49 Q , 29 V , 5 AWA)
2nd: 740 (50 Q , 40 V , 5 AWA)

Can converse in Spanish.

Work Exp: (is approximately 2 years now but will be just more than 3 by fall 2012)

Field: Pharmacy
8 Months: DVA- India.


Field: IT
1 Year: at TCS( leading IT consultancy firm) (would be 2.5 by fall 2012)
Worked with McKinsey for helping them with IT solutions. Contacts with some of the important people there.

Goal
Get MBA to pursue career in consultancy or entrepreneurship.

Assessment
Essays: Should be very good and focused

Schools of interest

Wharton
Stanford
Stern(NYU)
Duke
Emory
Georgetown
MIT

Hi,

Thanks for your post and congratulations on your 2nd attempt at the GMAT. You earned a great score that you should be proud of.

In regard to your profile, you must know that you fall into a very large applicant pool with a lot of stiff competition. This means that while you have the scores and experience to qualify for the programs on your list, you will have to work hard to stand out and gain admission. As you craft your essays I encourage you to think about what differentiates you from other applicants. What unique contribution can you make to a bschool community? I suggest starting out by taking a look at your extracurricular activities. Solid extracurricular activities not only demonstrates to bschools your likeliness to be involved on campus, but it's also a great way to set yourself apart from others in the pool. I suggest looking for ways to incorporate your activities outside of the office into your essays.

the GMAT debrief is not for you Stacey..why should you need it?It is my signature for my posts here. I kept it as a signature so as to facilitate ppl who ask my help on the other topics on this forum. :)

Hi Stacey,
Could you elaborate on your advice to pursue extra-curriculars outside my office? I would be grateful if you shed some more light on this advice. Can you give me some example on it? Does it include joining an NGO or something like that?

Hi,

Good question! Extracurricular activities could include volunteer work or activities of a personal nature. For instance, you can join a mentoring program and assist others, or if you like to run in your spare time, perhaps you can join a running group and train for a marathon. The best idea is to pick something that you like and find a way to share it with others either through a formal or informal organization.
