Profile Evaluation - top 15 school?

by southbaynic » Mon Jun 28, 2010 9:47 am
I'd appreciate any input on my competitiveness for a top-15 full-time program, thanks!

-I'm a white American female and will be 29 in fall 2011, when I plan to enter.

-GMAT Prep score of 740 (taking the real thing in 2 weeks, assume I can get a similar score)

-BA, Political Science (business minor): 3.67 GPA, graduated in 3 years

-MPA (public administration): 3.83 GPA, graduated in 1 year

-After a year in the public sector, I switched over to portfolio compliance in the investment management industry. I've been working in the industry performing the same type of work for almost 5 years. However, here's where I'm afraid my weakness is: due to relocation, then a layoff, then taking a job with a huge pay cut/commute - followed by an opportunity with a huge salary increase and very short commute, I've worked for 4 investment management companies in 5 years. They're all well-recognized names in the industry though. I was also rapidly promoted at the first two companies.

-Post-MBA plans: something finance-related, possibly corporate finance (I'll firm this up before writing my essays, obviously!)

-Personal: ran 4 marathons in just over a year (having never been a runner previously)

Hi,

You have excellent metrics, certainly worthy of a top-tier school. I see your concerns over what could look like "job-hopping". You will need to carefully explain the reasons for your moves. Your ability to land new jobs in this economy should actually testify to your abilities and your attractiveness to employers.

You will also have to explain why, after an MPA, you went into finance and now want an MBA. Unfortunately that could look like academic job-hopping. To offset that, your dedication to running (four marathons in a year!) can be positioned as demonstrating the level of commitment of which you are capable.

My one concern would be your recommendations. With so many job changes you need to be careful in selecting recommenders. Hopefully you did not burn your bridges when leaving your prior jobs and your current supervisor has seen enough of your work to write a convincing recommendation.

You have a solid foundation for application to a top fifteen school. With strong recommendations and essays you should be an excellent candidate. Remember, the schools you are targeting are exceptionally competitive and have many more outstanding applicants than they can accept. The help of an experienced admissions consultant can be crucial in identifying and positioning your strengths and countering any weaknesses.
