Accelerated MBA

by leona01 » Wed Mar 31, 2010 11:20 am
Hi,

I'd appreciate your advice on choosing appropriate MBA programs. Where can I find objective ranking? It seems to me that there are no clear answers and each source is very different. I plan to apply for 2011.

Also, I've discovered there is such a thing like an accelerated MBA program that lasts only 14 months. What is your opinion about these types of programs? And how they they compare to the traditional ones?

Expert reply would be appreciated!

Thanks.

L.

Leona: The rankings are different because they consider different aspects of an MBA program. Some, for instance, weigh what the recruiters think of the school more heavily, others may weigh scores and average salaries offered to the graduates more. More importantly, these rankings are averaged numbers and may mask the strength the programs may have in specific areas of your interest. Having said that, the rankings do capture general pereception - the "brand value" - of the B-Schools. My advice is to first analyze your objectives post-MBA; define geographical, financial, and other constraints; and then build a broader list of schools based on objective criteria (perhaps 10-15 schools). Then, you can short-list your preferred schools based on the scholastic and career opportunities the schools offer.

You can also insert your subjective criteria - e.g. your own perception of the schools based on your interaction with the alumni and admissions staff - to narrow the schools down at this stage.

Re: accelerated MBA programs - they have become more popular in the last few years because of the cost savings and quicker re-entry into one's career path. Many of the leading accelerated MBA programs are based in Europe and, more recently, Asia. Here is a Gurome blog that covers some of the leading programs:

Generally speaking, the two-year programs are better for deeper immersion in the curriculum and offer better opportunity to build networks. However, in light of current economy, the cost savings from a shorter program may be of value.

Hope that helps.
