Please evaluate my profile

Hi,

I’ve been following this forum for some time now and I love the advice you’ve been giving to all the MBA hopefuls out there. I was hoping you could please also evaluate my profile. I am planning on applying next year for admission to the 2010 school year and am targeting USC, UC Davis, UCLA and/or Berkeley’s part-time program, and maybe an International school (e.g. Insead or HEC). Based on my profile I am unsure on whether or not I have a realistic shot at getting into these programs, and I was hoping you could please give me some honest advice. Any advice on ways I could improve my application would be appreciated also.

Academics
I graduated from UC Berkeley in the Fall of 2007 with a 2.453 GPA as an Industrial Engineer. I began my program in 2001, however due to family, financial, and personal troubles I had one semester with all F’s and one D- and wasn’t able to finish the remaining two courses needed to graduate until the end of 2007.

Currently, I am planning on enrolling in a local community college this year and am going to take the following courses: accounting, microeconomics, calculus, statistics, college algebra, and finite math. I took calculus 1A as an undergrad and received a C, but I also took calculus 1B and received a B+ and multivariable and received a B-. I also took microeconomics as an undergrad and received a B- but I also took general economics and received a B+ and macroeconomics and received a B. Finally, I took statistics as an undergrad and received an A, but I also took another statistics class for engineers and received a D.

Work
I am currently working as a corporate development analyst on the corporate development team of a fortune 500 company. I manage the US and Canadian portions of our sales territories worldwide and frequently communicate and work with senior managers and executives within our company. I transferred to this position from another position within our company and I consider this move as a horizontal move upward (if that makes any sense). All of my work experience comes from this one company and I have been here since January 2006 (almost 3 years).

GMAT
I have not taken the GMAT yet but plan on taking it soon. As it stands, based on practice tests, I anticipate scoring in or around the 670 – 730 range.

Extracurricular
After college I have done various random extracurricular activities. I coached a 6th-7th grade basketball team for a year, I mentored and tutored three kids for one full school year, I’ve been trying to start a focus group about a skin condition I have called hyperhydrosis, and I have also ran in a couple marathons and am training for a triathlon next year. Also, most notably, I am currently taking the lead on trying to get a food program for families in financial need started here in my local area.

I apologize for the length of my post but I wanted to be as thorough as possible. If you can please let me know what you think I would really appreciate it. Thank you!

Dear tim0thy,

I commend you on your successful career and acknowledging some struggles in the classroom. It will be important for you to explicitly acknowledge your transcript in your applications and making the case that you are more prepared to handle coursework now. As you are applying to part-time programs, it is also good you plan to take some classes to demonstrate your ability to handle working and school simultaneously. As long as you get A's in your courses and score over a 670 on the GMAT, you should be able to overcome any concerns on your academic aptitude.

You have good work experience and some leadership in your community work. Be sure to leverage those to your advantage. It will also be important for you to communicate your rationale for attending business school and how it fits into your career goals. It appears you are taking this seriously and making preparations far in advance--this will serve you well next year.

Best of luck,
Lisa
