Hello Everyone,

I would like to know if I have reasonable chance of admission in a top B school. Based on my profile, which business schools would you recommend?

1) Age 31 years. Indian Male. GMAT 720 (Q:50; V:38)

2) Undergrad Education:
BE (Mechanical Engineering) from an institute that ranks among top 10 Indian Engineering Schools
GPA: 4.0

3) Grad Education:
MS (Mechanical Engineering) from a Top 15 US University in 2005.
GPA: 3.9

4) Publications: 1 conference publication, MS thesis, a book and 5 patent applications

5) Summary of Work Experience:
For the past 2 years, I have been working for a very reputated glass company in US as a Sr Research Engineer. Before glass company, I have worked as an Aerodynamics Research Engineer in a Gas Turbine Company for about 5 years. I have worked as a RA and TA back in Grad School. While I was in India, I worked in Indian IT industry for a year. During undergrad studies, I was awarded a summer fellowship from Indian Institute of Science, and I did a mini project there.

I have experience in modeling Natural Phenomena using Computational and physical models. I have several stories to demonstrate solid Problem Solving skills. I have led a few projects and mentored younger engineers. I never had direct reports though.

I have won several academic honors and distinctions. I have held many voluntary positions. Currently, I am working on creating environmental awarness with an organization.

Thanks for your evaluation,
Anurag

Hi Anurag,

You have an excellent profile. As far as GMAT is concerned, you need not worry because you have shown good performance in both undergrad and grad school. With around 8 years of experience and good undergrad and grad scores, a GMAT of 720 is good.

Your work experience is mostly focused on research. Your whole profile is a research-oriented profile. I had a hard time looking for instances where you have shown management skills, leadership potential and team skills. These stories can be explored through more discussions. But one more aspect that will be important for us to know to suggest you a B-school is your post MBA aspirations.

Where (industry, location) would you like to work post MBA? What role are you expecting after an MBA? Basically why do you want to do an MBA at the first place? Without these, school selection is impossible.

Hi Anurag,

You are on the wrong side of the age by 4-5 years for most of the schools. In your application, you also need to articulate why you need an MBA after such a long work experience.
