Profile evaluation request!

by vineet.gupta » Fri Aug 24, 2012 8:56 am
Hi,

Please find my details below for profile evaluation -

Age-24
Nationality-Indian

Class 10th - 86%
Class 12th - 85%

UG - B.E.(hons.) BITS-Pilani Mechanical Engineering (7.94/10)

GMAT - 750 (q50 v41)

ECs - NTSE Scholar (selected among 1000 top students in India for a Govt of India sponsored scholarship), founder of a club in college, event organizer during college fests, elected as a representative in student mess management committee. Nothing much after passing out from college.

WEx - 2 years & 2 months in a small company which provides solutions for mobile devices. Excellent performance at work. Got promoted twice during the 2 years. Now working as a senior developer.

I want to make a career shift to finance after MBA and I look forward to working in corporate finance roles. I have been trading in equity F&O and currency derivatives for past 1 year. During the course of my work I have worked on development of mobile banking and stock trading solution for a major bank of APAC region. I am also appearing for CFA level 1 exam this December. I plan to justify my career shift by citing these examples.

Target Schools -
ISB, NUS.

PS - I have to work in India after MBA because of family commitments. I do not plan to apply to any of the top US colleges because it would be difficult for me to pay back the huge loan amount while working in India. And I think a degree from 2nd tier US colleges will not hold much value in India. Am I right in thinking so?

Your credentials are strong, I would apply to a range of schools and see what kind of money you can get to attend various schools. This might make your decision a bit easier..;

Hi Vineet,

I have a slightly different opinion. If you apply to B-schools in U.S. and get admission in one of the top schools without a decent fellowship (most of the fellowships are small (USD 10-20K)), you will need lot of self-financing. But, you may land up in a dilemma weather to drop the admission to a top school. Despite low fellowship, you might end up going there because of brand equity of that school. Such is the human nature. If you are very firm on avoiding huge loans, then you should focus on schools like ISB.
