I am looking for suggestions for which top-tier schools in the US/Asia I should apply to(not interested in Europe). I have heard that INSEAD has a very strong consulting focus and Wharton/Chicago a strong finance focus. Post MBA I'm planning to get into general management/leadership positions in the industry.

You can start looking at the rankings from Business Week, Financial Times and US World News. Those are always good places to research programs.

I am looking at them and despite differences in their rankings, its easy to spot the top schools. One thing that is difficult to determine is which schools are geared towards industry needs.

I don't see myself working at a ibank or a consulting firm, so I would want to be in a school where most student share my aspirations :-). I am slowly ploughing through the employment reports. Any suggestions/pointers would be very helpful.

Which industries are you targeting?

MBAPrepAdvantage has an MBA School Rankings page that lists many of the rankings out there by a variety of criteria (https://www.mbaprepadvantage.com/blog/mb ... -rankings/).

I hope it helps.

Thanks MBAPrepAdvantage. These lists are helpful.

There aren't any industries that I am targeting specifically, but the preference is more in terms of corporate functions. I would want to start my post MBA career in areas like M&A, pricing, product marketing or competetive analysis.

I am glad these help. The finance and marketing lists match your functional areas.

Also, note which schools have research centers in areas that interest you, because research centers are often indicative of a school's strength and/or focus.

Also, pour through the employment reports to and compare the percentages of students obtaining post-MBA employment in your target fields to see which schools are more geared to what you want.

Good luck,

Hi whatthegmat,

The top schools are good in almost everything. For ex, even though Wharton has a reputation of being a finance school, it has excellent resources for recruitment in marketing and general management roles. Another factor that you would like to consider is that alumni from top schools have significant presence in the top echelons of general management positions. And, networking with the alumni has always been a route for job hunting. My suggestion is go for good schools. And, you never know your career plans may change once you get more exposure in the B-school. This happens with a good chunk of MBA class.
