Query on selecting Asian B schools.

by abhas59 » Tue Aug 03, 2010 12:00 pm
Hi,

I recently scored 660 (M 49, V 31).
I have 3 years of work experience in a reputed IT firm in India. I am working with Media & Information Services domain.
I am currently designated as Backup Lead, Information Security Manger, Business Continuity Manager & Incident Manager for the project.
My GPA is less than 3.5.
In addition for my personal achievements, I have received Best Performer for month 3 times in my work experience.

I would like to remain with IT industry after MBA. I am more interested to enroll in Asian colleges.
Can someone please let me know colleges that can be appropriate for me?

Also I have heard that giving TOEFL or IELTS might be an additional advantage for applicants who would have low Verbal Scores.
Can someone please let me know if I should give one of above two exams?

Hi,

You have a good, but not great GMAT, obviously lowered by your verbal score. Your GPA is also acceptable, but not terribly strong. Most schools that teach in English will require a TOEFL or IELTS score unless your undergraduate degree was taught in English. You should try practice tests to see what your TOEFL and IELTS scores would look like before taking a formal test. (You may be able to find a free practice test online.) Then you can study or take a course if needed.

Meanwhile, I have found topmba.com has as much or more information on specific Asian schools as any other course. The top Indian schools are very competitive as are the top schools in any country. You will need to check the specific schools to understand their language requirements.

Why are you interested in Asian schools? If you are looking to work internationally, but are more comfortable going to school in Asia, you might consider some of the US schools that have programs on-site in the Pacific Rim such as Washington University in St. Louis. Since you are looking to stay in IT, you should certainly check out the curricula at the Asian schools to see which ones offer the best courses to meet your needs.

Another approach is to identify a few key employers that you would like to work for and find out where they interview. Most schools will give information about who interviews on campus and where their graduates end up working.

In the end, I can't tell you which schools to choose, but there are many excellent ways for you to explore how your needs and record mesh with a school's offerings and selectivity.

Hi Tani,

Thanks for your reply. I came to know that TOEFL in most of the Asian B Schools is not mandatory if English is the language of teaching at undergraduate courses. Thus I don't think TOEFL exam will benefit me for admission into Asian Schools.
The reasons to select Asian Schools over US are Asian Schools especially in Singapore have increased in student diversity in few years. Also, the job opportunities in Asia after MBA has increased. Finally, the fees to complete an MBA in Asia is much more economical than in US or Europe.

Kind Regards,
Abhas.
