Hello,

I am an Indian living in Chennai,India who is looking to get some good management learning in a country abroad for better exposure. Also, I've always wanted to start a company in my early 30's after getting good experience working at great companies.

I've a few queries that I'd like someone's counselling on. Here's my profile :
10th standard - 94 %, 12th standard - 97 %,
Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science from Anna University, Chennai - 77 %,
GMAT - yet to give ( will be giving by end of January )
Work - Quality Assurance Engineer at Amazon for 1 year and 5 months. ( still working )
Extras - Guitar player, Secretary in Toastmasters International Club, Co-partner of a tee shirt printing business.

Now that I have been working in a predominantly technical IT role, I am looking at exploring other options. I'm actually in a fix, right now. I got to know about the various MiM programs offered by top b-schools a month ago. Considering I have a ~1.5 year work-ex in an IT role, what is the best way to go about my career ?
I'd really want to do a full time MBA after working for 3-4 years, but I don't want to do away my next 3 years in a software IT role, even though I work in a big brand. In short, I want to change my career path.

So, is MiM the best bet for me, considering my profile ? Should I go ahead write my GMAT and apply for the MiM courses starting in 2014?
The following are the schools I have in mind :
1. ESADE
2. IE Business School
3. HEC, Paris

What should I be targeting in the next few months ? How does my profile look for a MiM course ? How will MiM change my career ?
I'd really appreciate, if someone from the consultants or a present student studying MiM could counsel me on this and help me with my situation.
Thanks !

Hey there Aravind,

Thanks for dropping by. You ask a good question. An MiM can certainly be one good way to totally change your career at this point. It is only one option amongst many, but I feel a good one (if you can get into a good program). You can easily go out of the program and get into consulting or another field. But be aware that it isn't your ONLY option. You have plenty of other Masters available to you (although not yet an MBA), in general the more specific "professional" Masters. Like you could do a Masters in Finance or Marketing, or something else entirely which you are interested in. So you should certainly be looking into what else is out there. You will also have the option (although it may be more difficult in the Indian market) to move your function or your industry in your career.

But anyhow, since you are pretty sure you want to do an MBA later on anyhow, taking the GMAT now is a great idea, and in a certain sense you can help the GMAT decide for you. To have a decent shot at these schools it'd be better to have a 700+, so I wish you luck on that.

I hope this helps you out dude, and if you got anything else, just drop a line.

Hey Jon,

Thanks for the advice. It does make sense for me to go ahead and give my GMAT now, hopefully a 700+. But I just have one basic query regarding MiM. Most of the b-schools I see, give out requirements mentioning that the applicant must have a business experience and a business degree in the Bachelors, of which I have neither. I can see only a few like IE, ESADE, HEC, ESCP among others which do not have this criteria.
Does this put me at disadvantage among the applicants, considering the fact that those with business degree/experience will be preferred ? Is it really worth for me to apply given the background that I have ( in a Software role at Amazon ). Also, how does my work-ex impact my admissions ? Do the b-schools consider my work-ex, even though I have only a ~1.5 year experience ?
Thanks !

Hey there,

You got it dude. Happy to help.

Well the criteria for a business degree is somewhat flexible, I have found, as long as you have something to make up for it. You could always email the schools you are interested in on an individual level, and see if they are willing to consider your profile. Yes it may put you at somewhat of a disadvantage, but let's be honest, Biz and Tech are forever bound.

As for the work experience, of course it counts! After all you have it. I don't think they will consider it more than if someone has only internships, but you can draw stories and achievements from it in your application.
