by ca.srikant » Sat Jun 26, 2010 11:15 am
Hi Friends,

I am a Chartered Accountant and have also appeared for my CFA (US) level III exams this June. My GMAT score is 690 and i am planning to apply for Columbia early decision for 2011 and by the time class for 2011 will start i'll have almost 5 years of work ex (in commercial Banking industry with one of the leading global bank) excluding 3 years of articleship experience. I am in a fix whether to reappear for GMAT or go ahead with the current score.

Your suggestions are most welcome...

Hi Srikant,

Can you provide a few more details about your profile. It is difficult to make a meaningful assessment with the details presented.

In particular provide some details regarding
1) Education details (like GPA etc)
2) Any management experience
3) Extra curricular activities
4) Why do you want to do an MBA and how will columbia figure in your plan.

Hi Team,

my response updated below:

1) Education details (like GPA etc)
- I am a chartered Accountant and CFA level III candidate. Through out my academics i have been fairly good in academics scoring almost more than 60% in all my xams.
2) Any management experience
- in my last 4 years of work ex. I have primarily worked under two different roles with a highly recognised global bank.
a. managing a team of 40, including vendors and internal employees. I was solely responsible for managing the unit and any contingecy arising. I was under this role for almost 20 months
b. since last 2 years have been in client facing role, working as an account manager for institutional clients (mutual fund and insurance clients) across India, where many of them also invest globaly.

3) Extra curricular activities
- Thats the only weak link I trust one can identify. In my early days i was not at all involved in any extra curricular activities, however as of now i am currently involved with an NGO for environment conservation and on the other hand also working on investor education program along with operation heads of few mutual funds

4) Why do you want to do an MBA and how will columbia figure in your plan.
I have been focused on what I want do ahead and hence have been looking for a finance school which gives me flexibility to learn other than what I have already learnt in my academics. And am certain that Columbia with more than 50% of its graduate moving in finance field will b one of the best choice.

Hi Srikanth,

Your background in general is fairly OK to be able to Apply.

I would suggest you do not go for another GMAT at this time (It will take some time for you to improve your scores substantially). Instead focus on writing a good essay application.

This is the best way to utilize your time now (unless you are very confident that you can improve your score to about 730 before you can apply).
