Although many people object to advertisements and solicitations that intrude into their lives through such means as the telephone, the Internet, and television, companies and organizations must have the right to contact potential customers and donors whenever and however they wish.
Companies should not have the right to contact people whenever and however they wish. If companies were given this right the lives of people could be negatively disturbed. People's rights to live free from disturbances should trump companies' rights to sell products.
Many people do in fact object to advertisements and solicitations that intrude into their lives. People don't want to have to answer phone calls they are not interested in; people don't want to have to watch loud and obnoxious commercials on TV; and people don't want to have ads popping around their web browsers while trying to find information. However, if companies were given rights to use these tactics without any regulation these disturbances would increases.
Companies who advertise over the telephone are disturbing people's lives in a serious way. Most people prefer to be left alone instead of constantly being "sold to". A ringing phone is usually a nuisance when the caller on the other end is not someone that the person answering wants to hear from. Supporters of such companies might claim that people can just not answer the phone when such a call comes in. This is difficult in practice however. Some people's phones might not show who the caller is, so the person would have no way of successfully screening the call. Many people might also not want to be disturbed by phone calls at certain times of the day. Many companies claim that they don't make phone calls in the early morning or late evening hours and only call in a certain block of time in the evening when most people are enjoying leisure time. This tactic might work with people that lead regular work schedules, but many people - for example nurses who work night shifts - might use the early evening to sleep before work.
Giving companies rights to advertise "however" they want could also be damaging to many people. People with children might not want them to have to watch inappropriate advertisements placed in a program that the parents have deemed suitable for the child to watch. Internet advertising has similar problems. Certain web pages that are fine for children might have an ad pop up that is not suitable. Again, supporters of such companies might state that people who don't want to see ads can just turn the tv off or not surf the internet. But why should people give up an entire form of entertainment and education, one that they have paid for, just because a company wants to increase its advertising?
If companies were given rights to advertise whenever and however they wish there would be no way for people to stop them; they would just have to learn to live with these annoyances. Because of this there should be some overseeing power that prevents this from happening.
Companies should listen to people's desires. If they choose to continue such tactics many people might start to resent them and choose to not do business with them.
