Low GPA

by patsfan333 » Thu Sep 01, 2011 10:02 am
Hi guys,
I had a few questions which mainly revolve around my low GPA. The truth is I messed up my final semester in university. I had a 74 average in my final year going into that final semester. Then since my father's health is slowly deteriorating (because of his job)and also the fact they lowered his wage, I was forced to take 6 courses over the summer, instead of the 3, to complete my degree and help out with the mortgage among other payments. This destroyed my GPA and lowered it substantially. I do not wish to make excuses but how do I showcase myself if this is to occur? I do volunteer but not extensively. I am also in the process of looking for work. Any assistance would be helpful.

Well, then if that's what happened, you just gotta tell them in an optional essay. The AdCom readers are people too, they understand. And you don't need to get all Oprah sentimentally on them, but tell them your reasons clearly and they will understand. The tricky thing in these essays is hitting the right tone.

Hi patsfan333,

Thanks for posting. There are ways to address a low GPA. I recommend you read this case study of a candidate with a sub 3.0 GPA who was accepted into Columbia and Chicago Booth:

Hope this was of help.

Cheers,

I echo Jon's sentiments. Tone in optional essays means everything. You wish to explain how your fulfilling family commitments while balancing an overloaded academic schedule adversely affected your final grades.
