Accepted to School X but want to go to School Y

Accepted to School X but want to go to School Y

Here is the story and question
I applied to to MBA X and was admitted. I accepted the offer. Before I started the program I did more research on it and turns out I don't want to go. In a different admissions cycle I applied to school Y because that is where I truly want to go. If I am accepted I will withdraw my acceptance from school X. I did not tell school Y that in a previous admissions cycle I applied to school X and was accepted. Do I need to let them know before they make their decision on my admission?

I would love any advice. Thank you!

No, no need to tell them. You are under no obligation to disclose where you applied and where you were accepted in the past.

Your story is not that unusual -- many people get accepted to "safety" schools but save their application to dream schools for later. I always feel that it helps admissions in some way just having one acceptance in your files, like wind under your wings. You are under no obligation to tell School Y about School X, or vice-versa: the MBA is for you, and you have every right to make the decision that's best for you.

That said, I am curious what will happen if the only acceptance you get is from School X, which you have decided you don't want to go to. Will you re-think that decision, defer acceptance, or start over entirely in Fall 2017?
