Analysis of An Argument
"The recent surge in violence in the southern part of the city is a result of a shortage of police officers and an absence of leadership on the part of the city council. In order to rectify the burgeoning growth of crime that threatens the community, the city council must address this issue seriously. Instead of spending time on peripheral issues such as education quality, community vitality, and job opportunity, the city council must realize that the crime issue is serious and double the police force, even if this action requires budget cuts from other city programs."
Author cites that the recent surge in violence in the city is a result of shortage of police officers in the city. To resolve the issue the author advised to beef up the security in the city by doubling the police force. In addition, the author also points out that the city council should concentrate more to curb burgeoning crime, instead of wasting time in addressing issues like education quality, community viality and job opportunity. The argument is flawed and the author has based his conclusion on several unsubstantiated assumptions.
Firstly, the author didn't consider the factors which augmented the crime in the city. Factors of crime could be anything like rising unemployment, racism, political outrage etc. Recent Economic slowdown has left scores of people jobless. Lack of money for subsistence could have led people to take the path of burglary.Cases of racism could have also raised the crime count in the city.
Secondly, the author didn't consider the time frame for which council is planning to keep the police force deployed.Morever, the author assumed that deploying more police force will solve the purpose. Instead, the city council should take some measures to ascertain and weed out the root cause of the escalating crime.
Thirdly, the author deemed issues like education quality, community vitality, job opportunity as trivial. Ignoring such critical issues would create more troubles for the city council. Hence, instead of cutting short the budget allotted for other critical issues, council should come up with more effecient idea to combat the crime.
In sum,the author's illogical argument is based on unsupported premises and unsubstantiated assumptions that render his conclusion invalid. The city council should stride to ascertain the root casue of the increasing crime rate and resolve the issue.
