not sure what you're saying about 'which', so here's the lowdown:
when a relative clause follows a comma and begins with 'which', that relative clause is taken to refer to the nearest noun. in this case, that noun is '(earth's earliest) days'; therefore, the sentence takes on the absurd meaning that earth's earliest days erupted through volcanoes.

answer choice c doesn't contain 'had been' (go back and look at it again).

So let me get this straight any noun / subject that is before the comma wil be used as the main subject if a WHICH is used right after?

apple, which is sweet.
tree, which is tall

like that?>

if so I learned something important today.

By the way my last name means lunarpower. ha how cool. I am finally feling comfortable with the exam just nervous to take the actual exam now. any suggestions

Why we are eliminating Option ' B'? Please explain.

'had been' is Past Perfect Continuous.
We use the Past Perfect Continuous to show that something started in the past and continued up until another time in the past.
