Profile Evaluation - Low GMAT

by texasmba06 » Wed Sep 16, 2009 12:07 pm
I am curious what my chances are of getting into either Texas or Duke.

-Graduated from McCombs-Texas with a Finance degree in 2006 (im 26);GPA was 3.6
-Worked for one year at JPMorgan and then left to go to a boutique sell-side investment bank;
-Started as an analyst and promoted to associate after a year and a half
-the firm also had multiple rounds of layoffs
-extracurricular activities are strong (president of fraternity in college, currently serve as an advisor to a local chapter and a few others)
-looking to go back to school to move into venture capital; something that sparked my interest since we're doing more growth equity transaction these days and i want an mba before i can make the move into VC.

-Kicker - ive taken the gmat twice. 580 and 590. im not a good test taker, bottom line.

*what are my chances getting into duke/texas? what schools should i be targeting with these credentials

Dear texasmba06,

Your GMAT score is the only question mark based on the information provided in your post. I think you have an outside chance at Texas and Duke, but it will take your essays, resume, recommendations and interviews to make the compelling case to be one of the few offered a seat in those programs with a GMAT outside the mid 80% range. I think you can apply, but that you should also identify schools whose mid-80% of the GMAT range encompasses your score. Perhaps look at Vanderbilt, Indiana, UCLA, and Rice? If you did fairly well on the quant section (>40), that will also be helpful.

Good luck,
Lisa
