If a number between 0 and 1/2 is selected at random, which of the following will the number most likely be between?
(A) 0 and 3/20
(B) 3/20 and 1/5
(C) 1/5 and 1/4
(D) 1/4 and 3/10
(E) 3/10 and 1/2

I know the answer is E, but can someone explain why?

SInce all of the number lie between 0 and 1/2. Try to find the range of each

1. 3/20 - 0 = 0.15
2. 1/5 - 3/20 = 0.05
3. 1/4 - 1/5 = 0.05
4. 3/10 - 1/4 = 0.05
5. 1/2 - 3/10 = 0.2.

E has the maximum range and so most likely to have the number among the options

Converting all the denominators to 20 yields the following numerators:

0 and 3
3 and 4
4 and 5
5 and 6
6 and 10

The greatest range is 6 and 10.
Since all of the other ranges are smaller, the probability of picking a number between 6 and 10 is greater than the probability of picking a number within any of the other ranges.

The correct answer is E.
