Could you please show me, which is better between these two following sentences


1. Plants are more efficient at acquiring carbon than are fungi.


2. Plants are more efficient at acquiring carbon than fungi.

Plants are more efficient at acquiring carbon than fungi.
is the correct one.

The keyword here is than. Whatever is to the left of than must be grammatically similar to the right of it
Also the comparison is between plants and fungi and not carbon and fungi.

Hence the statement could be written as

Plants are more efficient at acquiring carbon than fungi are.

But are can be omitted
