Which one is correct?

by Resp007 » Sat Nov 16, 2013 7:33 am
HI,

Between the following, which one is correct and why?

1. Sales figures seem as if to indicate the economy is not nearing a recession.
2. Sales figures seem to indicate that the economy is not nearing a recession.

Is in sentence 1, it means: sales figures are indicating the economy something?
Is "indicate that" an IDIOM that will always appear together?
Any thoughts?

Thanks

Sentence 2 is better - Indicate that

The use of "indicate that" has more to do with meaning.

If we carefully read the sentence one, we will realize that the meaning has changed

Sales figures seem as if to indicate the economy is not nearing a recession --> this seem to mean that Sales figures are indicating something to economy. hence, incorrect

Given that, we cannot generalize that "indicate" without "that" is always wrong.

For example: Brian will indicate me a good books for Verbal.

So, always look for meaning.. you will find many such issues
