Like many self-taught artists, Perle Hessing did not begin to paint until she was well into middle age.
(A) Like
(B) As have
(C) Just as with
(D) Just like
(E) As did

OA A

My question is why E is wrong.
As did Many self taught artist is forming a clause.

Clause = subject + verb.... no verb is present here... as many self taught artists painted would have been a clause...

Infact did helps to form a clause.

As per MGMAT SC

these both sentences are correct

Like her brother, laura aced the test
As her brother did,Laura aced the test

did in the second sentence refers to "aced the test".

can some expert please help to explain why option E is wrong ?

1) An extra word. You know how the GMAT hates extra words!
2) There is extra difficulty in paralleling a negative main clause. She did not go to the store, as did her brother (or She did not go to the store, as her brother did) would actually imply that her brother went to store, but she did not. To use E, we would want As did many self-taught artists, Perle Hessing began painting when she was well into middle age.
