Strep infection CR

by aj5105 » Fri Jan 16, 2009 8:20 pm
The traditional treatment of strep infections has been a seven-day course of antibiotics, either penicillin or erythromycin. However, since many patients stop taking those drugs within three days, reinfection is common in cases where those drugs are prescribed. A new antibiotic requires only a three-day course of treatment. Therefore, reinfection will probably be less common in cases where the new antibiotic is prescribed than in cases where either penicillin or erythromycin is prescribed.

Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument?

A. Some of the people who are allergic to penicillin are likely to be allergic to the new antibiotic.
B. A course of treatment with the new antibiotic costs about the same as a course of treatment with either penicillin or erythromycin.
C. The new antibiotic has been shown to be effective in eradicating bacterial infections other than strep.
D. Some physicians have already begun to prescribe the new antibiotic instead of penicillin or erythromycin for the treatment of some strep infections.
E. Regardless of whether they take a traditional antibiotic or the new one, most patients feel fully recovered after taking the drug for three days.

why not B.

A course of treatment with the new antibiotic costs about the same as a course of treatment with either penicillin or erythromycin.

If the treatment does not costs same and is prohibitively expensive then if if the new drug is prescribed it will not be taken and will not result in decrease of case where the new drug is prescribed.

E puts the effect of the new drug and old drug at equal footing. It does not strngthens the conclusion.

IMO B...

We need additional information to strengthen the conclusion. E just restate the argument.

What is OA?

I say (E). Patients will probably not change their habits about not taking the drug for the prescribed amount of time. If we know that most patients will take it for 3 days, that would mean that a large portion of patients will be fully cured with the new drug rather than a much smaller portion with the older drugs.

Nowhere is the stimulus does it imply that cost is a factor in determining the drug of choice.

A. Some of the people who are allergic to penicillin are likely to be allergic to the new antibiotic. allergy-out of scope of discussion
B. A course of treatment with the new antibiotic costs about the same as a course of treatment with either penicillin or erythromycin. cost is not releveant for reinfection
C. The new antibiotic has been shown to be effective in eradicating bacterial infections other than strep. other bacterial infections are irrelevant
D. Some physicians have already begun to prescribe the new antibiotic instead of penicillin or erythromycin for the treatment of some strep infections. Authority doesnt mean they are correct
E. Regardless of whether they take a traditional antibiotic or the new one, most patients feel fully recovered after taking the drug for three days.Correct- feel fully recovered in 3 days makes them stop treatment cauing reoccurance, hence the need for a 3 day treatment!!

IMO E

B sounds good but cost is not mentioned in the passage!

IMO E! The passage says old drug kills bacteria in 7 days. But ppl stop taking old drug after 3 days bc they feel better, and get reinfected. The new drug kills the bacteria in 3 days. But what if they feel better after taking it for 1 day? Then they will stop and get reinfected. But E says they feel better after 3 days both with old and new drug, this means ppl will keep taking it for 3 days and thus will not get reinfected.

E contradicts the statement. There is a new info on B, but it is ok for strengthen the conclusion type CR question. IMO B

Its damn clear the answer is B and not E.

The argument is that " introduction of new antibiotics has reduced the reinfection " We should look at answers that support this.

In E, even otherwise without the new antibitic people will not get in to reinfection is wat it conveys...

I guess rather than looking it B as an out of scope or new introduction look it as an support for the argument's loop holes
than wud clearly say that ..
there is no reason that wud stop people from going in for the new antibiotic bcoz the price is alslo the same ,so reinfection is grtly stopped consuming new antibiotic

FYI.. strengthening questions can include new informations....
Thanks
Senthil

It seems impossible until its done.
