In x + 2 years, Joe's age will be double what it was x - 7 years ago. If Joe was x years old 6 years ago, how old will Joe be in 3 years?

Joe's current age = (x + 6)
(x - 7) years ago, Joe's age was = (x + 6) - (x - 7) = 13 years
After (x + 2) years, Joe's age will be = (x + 6) + (x + 2) = (2x + 8) years

Hence, (2x + 8) = 2*13 ---> x = (26 - 8)/2 = 9

Therefore, after 3 years, Joe's age will be (x + 6 + 3) = (9 + 9) = 18 years

The correct answer is D.

We can plug in the answers choices, which represent how old Joe will be in 3 years.

Answer choice C: 15
Joe now = 15-3 = 12.
Six years ago, Joe = x = 12-6 = 6.
In x + 2 years, Joe's age will be double what it was x - 7 years ago.
x-7 = -1.
Too small.
Eliminate A, B and C.

Answer choice D: 18
Joe now = 18-3 = 15.
Six years ago, Joe = x = 15-6 = 9.
In x + 2 years, Joe's age will be double what it was x - 7 years ago.
x-7 = 9-7 = 2.
2 years ago, Joe = 15-2 = 13.
x+2 = 9+2 = 11.
In 11 years, Joe = 15+11 = 26.
Success!

My way to reach to the solution was exactly in line with Anaurag's way to solve.

(x+2) + j = 2(j-(x-7)), this is the equation i came up with "j" as Joe's age

and j-6=x

2 eqn and 2 variables, so possible to solve and after finding "j", add 3 for the final answer
