Given that the ratio of male students to female students in a philosophy class is 3 : 5, say there are 3x male students and 5x female students; thus, there are 3x + 5x = 8x students. So, we have 8x = 40 => x = 5; thus, there are 5x = 5*5 = 25 female students.

The correct answer: E

Hope this helps!

We can create the equation:

3x + 5x = 40

8x = 40

x = 5

So, there are 5 * 5 = 25 female students.

GIVEN: the ratio of male students to female students in a philosophy class is 3:5
3+5 = 8
So, for every 8 philosophy students, 3 are males and 5 are females.
In other words, 5/8 of the philosophy students are female.

So, if there are 40 students, the number of females = 5/8 of 40
= (5/8)(40)
= 25

Answer: E
