4. On the number line, if x is halfway between -5 and 3, and if y is halfway between -2 and 6, what number is halfway between x and y ?
(A) -1
(B) - 1/2
(C) 0
(D) 1/2
(E) 1

find the distance b/w x: 5+3 = 8

halfway is 8/2 = 4 units from each point

so 3 - 4 = -1 (is the halfway pt)

find the distance b/w y: 6+2 = 8

halfway is 8/2 = 4 units from each point.

6 - 4 = 2 (is the halfway pt.)

2-(-1) = 3

Halfway is 3/2 units from each point.

so 2-3/2 = 1/2
