speed problem

by GmatTakerNo.1 » Sun May 02, 2010 11:44 am
Hey, do you guys have an idea how to solve this one?

Madison is 200 miles west of Chicago and St. Paul is west Madison. At 9am Andy leaves Chicago for St. Paul. At 1pm Bill leaves Madison for St. Paul. If Bill drives 20 mph faster than Andy and they both arrive in St. Paul at 4 pm, how fast is Bill driving?

The answer is 85 mph.

St.Paul ----D------ Madison ----200--- Chicago

Bill finishes his journey in 3 hours
Bill's speed(B) = D/3
D=3B

Andy finishes his journey in 7 hours
Andy's speed = B-20

Therefore,
(200+D)/(B-20)=7

200+3B=7B-140

B=85
