The first trenches that were cut into a 500-acre site at Tell Hamoukar, Syria, have yielded
strong evidence for centrally administered complex societies in northern regions of the
Middle East that were arising simultaneously with but
independently of the more
celebrated city-states of southern Mesopotamia, in what is now southern Iraq.

B, D - sub verb mismatch - out
A, C - using past prog (were arising) - it sud be used to describe bkground event while use simple past to describe foreground event - nothing of that situation here (eg: She was playing when the teacher arrived) - source MGMAT SC.

Additionally C - with missing (breaks the llel - simultaneously with but independently of) - out
Additionally A - 'that' at the beginning appears to be unnecessary - from that angle we can immediately remove A & B
IMO: E
. Thanks Lets discuss.

IMO E

A) 'evidence for' is not correct + 'that were arising' doesnt clearly modify complex socities

B) S-V dont agree. The trenches ... yields

C) having been cut is unnecessary. + 'simultaneously' is not parallel with 'independent of'. You need 'simultaneously with'.

D) S-V dont agree. The trenches ... yields

Hope that helps.
